Panda-logollaan ihmisten sydämiin tiensä raivannut WWF (entinen World Wildlife Fund) on nykyisin aivan muuta kuin mitä useimmat ajattelevat. Tämä EU:n ja monien maiden hallitusten sekä yksityisten kansalaisten runsaskätisesti rahoittama NGO - maailman varakkain ympäristöjärjestö - on esimerkiksi voimakkaasti lobbaamassa sille itselleen tuottoisaa, järjetöntä päästökauppaa Amazonin sademetsien "pelastamiseksi". Daily Telegraphin Christopher Booker kirjoittaa kolumnissaan tästä uskomattoman röyhkeästä suunnitelmasta, joka toivottavasti ei koskaan toteudu:

WWF hopes to find $60 billion growing on trees
The carbon credits scheme would make WWF and its partners much richer, but with no lowering of overall CO2 emissions, writes Christopher Booker .

If the world’s largest, richest environmental campaigning group, the WWF – formerly the World Wildlife Fund – announced that it was playing a leading role in a scheme to preserve an area of the Amazon rainforest twice the size of Switzerland, many people might applaud, thinking this was just the kind of cause the WWF was set up to promote. Amazonia has long been near the top of the list of the world’s environmental cconcerns, not just because it includes easily the largest and most bio-diverse area of rainforest on the planet, but because its billions of trees contain the world’s largest land-based store of CO2 – so any serious threat to the forest can be portrayed as a major contributor to global warming.

If it then emerged, however, that a hidden agenda of the scheme to preserve this chunk of the forest was to allow the WWF and its partners to share the selling of carbon credits worth $60 billion, to enable firms in the industrial world to carry on emitting CO2 just as before, more than a few eyebrows might be raised. The idea is that credits representing the CO2 locked into this particular area of jungle – so remote that it is not under any threat – should be sold on the international market, allowing thousands of companies in the developed world to buy their way out of having to restrict their carbon emissions. The net effect would simply be to make the WWF and its partners much richer while making no contribution to lowering overall CO2 emissions.

The Daily Telegraphin Christopher Booker kertoo kolumnissaan uskomattoman tarinan pehmopandaimagollaan ratsastavan WWF:n suunnitelmista rahastaa satoja miljoonia Amatsonin sademetsistä. Maailman vaurain ympäristöjärjestö ei harrasta mitään nappikauppaa:

Brittibloggaaja Richard Northin sivulla on runsaasti täydentävää aineistoa WWF:stä:

Tässä pieni näyte, josta mm. käy ilmi, että panda-WWF:n johtajat eivät kuulu ympäristöaktivistien köyhempään päähän:

Like the profit-making international corporations it so freely criticises – into which it has crawled into bed, taking their money – the WWF itself is a massive international corporation,. Its declared income for 2008 was €447 million, including €107.7 million for its international arm.

This enables it to finance a massive publicity effort, giving it privileged access to the media, and to governments and international agencies – from which it draws much of its funding.

Ranged against this corporate giant is a disparate, ill-funded range of individuals and groups, with only a small fraction of its resources. Inevitably, the voice of WWF is heard loudest, drowning out complaints and concerns.

That much also applies to its field activities. Where, as is so often, it is operating in remote areas, there is rarely an independent voice or observer capable of recording what precisely happens. Much of what we know of WWF's activities, therefore, comes from WWF itself, inevitably spun in its own favour.

The greatest criticism, however, is that the organisation is manifestly self-serving. Certainly, no one can argue that WWF is not personally rewarding for some of its officers. The current CEO of the US branch, Carter S Roberts (pictured left), is paid "compensation" of $439,327.

Before joining WWF he spent 15 years at The Nature Conservancy. Earlier in his career, he led marketing and management teams at Gillette, Procter and Gamble and at Dun and Bradstreet, where he advised companies including RJR/Nabisco and Coca-Cola. The associations reinforce the impression of a small clique dominating the environmental charity "industry" and the closeness between that industry and the commercial corporates.

Pehmeällä Pandaimagollaan ratsastava WWF paljasti todellisen - äärialarmistisen - nykyolemuksensa Bonnin ilmastokokouksessa:

BONN, Germany —
The U.N. sanctioned two activist groups Monday after a Saudi Arabian nameplate was vandalized at a recent climate change conference.

Three members of the World Wildlife Fund and Oxfam International were barred from future meetings for taking the Saudi plate at a June meeting, breaking it into pieces and distributing photographs of it in a toilet bowl.

PS
Tuollaista porukkaa me suomalaisetkin veronmaksajat elätämme, sillä EU:han on yksi suurimpia WWF:n rahoittajia.
